Social Learning - Truth and Consequences

Anyone that's been patient enough to endure my ranting has heard me pose the following sequence of questions?

Do you use a GPS? (Most people admit to knowing about a GPS and many use them - especially when out of town or going someplace for the first time or a long distance)
What did you use before the GPS was invented? (Most people say MapQuest or some other form of online maps)
And what did you use before MapQuest? (Many people say they had a book of maps or Triptix from AAA)
And if you did not have a map or book of maps? (Most people (fewer men than women) say they asked someone for directions.)

OK. so what does this have to do with growing your revenues?

ILT = Asking someone for directions
Self-paced learning = Book of Maps
eLearning = MapQuest
Performance Support = GPS
Social Learning = GPS used to interact with other GPS users that answer your inquiries or provide you information via your GPS as you are in transit.

2012 Update: Task Automation = Autonomous Vehicle

2017 Update: Dynamically Generated Learning??? = Synchronized Vehicle??? (predictive learning?)

2021 Update: Ultimate Adaptive Learning (UAL???) = Chatbot (supported in real-time with a human)

As I was reading Nathan Rogers' book - Unstructured - it occurred to me that one aspect of focusing on performing rather than learning is that we can become free of needing to learn somethings - allowing us to do other things with the time we have saved.

As an example - I can ever accept how to be OK with someone else driving my car (or OK with an autonomous vehicle - not sure which will happen first) - think of the time that will be available to me to perform other things!

Today - thank you David Brill https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-brill-msit-6572ba1/ I have a new appreciation for the potential for Chatbots related to the evolution of training. Might our ability to converse with the GPS in an "intelligent" real-time manner be something we desire?

When the GPS was new - I recall some lamenting - "But you didn't learn how to get there" to which I responded - "Did you get there?" This brief interaction which sometimes created nervous laughter (from both sides) reveals the following:

  • K-12 and Higher Ed focus on learning. The workplace is focused on doing.
  • Designing workplace solutions that unobtrusively allow us to determine if the task was successfully accomplished is the promise of technology and workplace learning.
  • And as we see with the current and future automotive technologies - how can we enable the performer to do more valuable things by automating what they used to have to do

In this "GPS analogy" what will follow the Autonomous vehicle?

How about the "synchronized vehicle" that is synchronized with your online calendar and the calendars of those you wish to meet with. You get into your car with little care for where you are headed - you prepare for your destination in transit - and arrive safely and ready to do business. And if one of you is running late - the vehicles that you and the person you are meeting with might dynamically "resynch" the meeting location.

What if I wanted to request someone to mow my lawn at 2:00 tomorrow and there were landscapers (not unlike uber-drivers) with synchronized vehicles prepared to do the work? For that matter - perhaps the lawnmowers would be autonomous or synchronized with weather and lawn conditions so they would show up on their own?

What would we call the learning that is analogous to the "synchronized vehicle? Dynamically Generated Learning? Not too catchy - let's think of something better.

It takes my analogy one step further to the concept of task automation - the domain of industrial engineers in the past. Could it now also be the domain of performance consultants?

We hear so much about the 20-10-70 rule in training. The GPS story helps us apply this to training and learning.

20% of our effort is in making sure that we have the right GPS, up-to-date features, downloads and capabilities.
10% of our effort is in understanding how to use it effectively
70% of our effort is in using it to get to the place we want to go.

Do you agree with these percentages? If not, how would you adjust them?

I believe that this means that training, consulting and technology companies need to pay attention to the 20-10-70 but that the 70 will grow, the 20 will diminish and the 10 will virtually disappear.

...and more and more I am hearing about how "social functionality" is being included with GPS systems. Drivers helping other drivers via the GPS. This is good for the future of the training industry but we have to adapt.
