2015 Are You Suffering From Measurement Fatigue?

An interesting read for the healthcare and the training industry would be "More Than a Numbers Game" - A Brief History of Accounting by Thomas A. King. It was easy for me to take for granted how simple it must be to agree on measurement of financial performance until I read this book and learned about the history of accounting in the U.S. - which is relatively young - especially when we realize that corporations have been taxed for barely 100 years.

It took legislation - which was ignored for a while, a crisis - stock market crash, depression and about 20 years or so of wrangling to produce the relatively "calm" approach that emerged. We are nowhere near that with healthcare and not even having serious conversation about this with training.

It will require full public disclosure, independent audit and the threat of jail in order to have measurement that we can trust.

It may not take as long - if we get serious about it. Technology must be an ally when we are ready - and not just for computing. It will be used to collect, validate, correlate and evaluate - and perhaps at some point mandate!

Our intelligence in the 20th century allowed us to create process and structure as the "solution for everything."

And yet it has also yielded a tax code that is beyond human comprehension - might we also need to hire a CPA to make sure we are getting the healthcare we are entitled to? How about our education and retirement benefits? Is there an antidote for complexity?
