Your Revenue Driver

I frequently compare the responsibility for professional development to the responsibility for personal health. Most people understand that they own the responsibility for both and yet we have become dependent on our employer to cover the financial aspect of both responsibilities.

I'll leave the healthcare issue for others to debate. Our question becomes one of professional development. We have become accustomed to believe that once we leave college that our financial responsibility for professional development must be covered by our employer.

It is wonderful when that happens. Are we prepared and willing to invest if that did not happen? Would we join professional associations or purchase training on our own if our employer would not reimburse the expenses? We might out of necessity when faced with sudden unemployment - but would we as a matter of course continue to do so after we regain employment?

Would it make a difference if we could set up "Training Savings Accounts" similar to "Health Savings Accounts?"

Is it desirable for individuals to take responsibility for the professional development? If not - why not? if so - what incentives would make this sustainable?

This  topic reminds me of what I learned from my friend - Hal Schlenger when I casually stated - "Everyone wants to be healthy" to which he responded - "No, everyone wants to not be sick, if they wanted to be healthy they would act much differently."

So does everyone "Want to be good" or is it actually that "We don't want to be bad?"
