2014 Why Is It So Hard To Get Health & Human Service Organizations T...

"These discussions are not that unusual in the world of behavioral health. In fact, implementing new research into practice—even interventions that have demonstrated efficacy and effectiveness—presents major challenges. It takes up to 20 years for new knowledge from clinical trials to be incorporated into practice (see Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Centur...). A study of research adoption found that it took “17 years to turn 14 percent of original research findings to the benefit of patient care” (see From Science to Service: A Framework for the Transfer of Patient Sa... and Clinical Research to Clinical Practice — Lost in Translation?). This situation means that in the intervening two decades that it takes for new discoveries to make their way to consumers, there is a lot of unnecessary human suffering and a lot of unnecessary cost."

How long does it take our industry to implement innovations?

Performance Support Systems were designed in the early 90's. Have they come and gone? Did they ever arrive?

Social learning may bypass us?

What about Machine Learning?

Do we want to accelerate and lead the way? If so - what will need to happen? Is taking a risk part of what needs to happen?

2015 Will Your Consumers Miss You If You Are Gone?

"...consumer engagement is “the ongoing interactions between company and customer, offered by the company, chosen by the customer” (see CRM Expert Paul Greenberg Defines Customer Engagement). Consumer engagement can be measured (see Customers 2020: The Future of B-to-B Customer Experience) with four metrics:

  1. Usage
  2. Sentiment
  3. Involvement
  4. Competitive Status

Which of these do we measure? When? How?

2016 The Future Of Medicaid Expansion – What Are The Facts & Do They...

"In the midst of the election season, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and Medicaid expansion has taken back seat on the national stage. But like many issues in the U.S. it is a much bigger issue at the state level. Why? Because Medicaid was approximately 15% of state budgets as recently as 2013 (see Medicaid’s Share Of State Budgets). And, as the federal subsidies for Medicaid expansion ends, the costs of Medicaid in states that have expanded Medicaid will increase."

Learning - similar to healthcare - will happen - whether insured or not - and independent of who pays for it. The real issues are:

  1. Does it occur in time to have impact?
  2. Is it effective?
  3. Is it efficient?
  4. Is it reflective of the culture that represents our company?

So while budgets and corporate politics are always in play - it may be helpful to study healthcare from a safe (and apolitical distance) to learn from their issues and or best to create answers to the above 4 questions - independent of budgets and corporate politics. Does this seem possible? Is it worthwhile to try?

201Ethical Culture Needs Ethical Leaders

"Ethical leadership is directed by respect for ethical beliefs and values and for the dignity and rights of others. For leaders, that means appropriate conduct through personal actions and relationships, and the promotion of such conduct to subordinates through two-way communication, reinforcement, and decision-making (for more, see Executive Leadership Competencies In An Era Focused On Value).

Mr. Carr shared five ethical models that thinkers in the West have used for centuries:

  1. Utilitarian: strives for solutions with the most good (or least harm); considers impact to all key parties and tries to create balance in what’s gained and lost
  2. Rights-based: focuses on protecting and respecting rights of others, and giving them as much self-determination as possible
  3. Fairness/Justice: attempts to treat everyone equally or equitably; if there is inequality, it must be logically and morally defensible
  4. Common Good: puts aside questions of independence and self-interest in favor of fostering healthy relationships and communities
  5. Virtue-based: concentrates on moral character and maximizing human potential (however those are defined); typically emphasizes characteristics such as honesty, compassion, and integrity"

What is ethical learning?

2018 OptumRx Acquires Genoa Healthcare

"UnitedHealth Group acquired Genoa Healthcare, which operates on-site pharmacies at mental health centers, from Advent International. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Genoa’s operations will be incorporated into the UnitedHealth Group OptumRx pharmacy care service unit. As a business unit of OptumRx, no changes are planned to Genoa Healthcare’s current branding or existing contracts. In a press statement, an Optum spokesperson said, “To help better support the pharmacy needs of patients with behavioral health and substance use disorders"

What situation would motivate you as a CLO to recommend to your company that a learning provider be acquired by your organization?

What would you like your role to be in this decision and in the management of the assimilation?
