2017 Looking Ahead To The Era Of Configured Networks

In my career I have seen sales/business development evolve over the last 40 years from:

  1. Coerce
  2. Convince
  3. Consult
  4. Collaborate
  5. Co-operate
  6. Configure

This also reflects in parallel the options we have for learning:

  • Coerce - in Pre-k and much of K-12 - there are few options. We learn what we are allowed to learn on a schedule and format determined by someone else.
  • Convince - Perhaps in middle school and high school we are convinced to choose courses that will prepare us for careers - and yet we are still limited to what our school offers (convince when coercion is not available)
  • Consult - as we prepare for college we my consult with guidance counselors at universities who are also inclined to help us make decisions that align with their goals (consult in order to convince)
  • Collaborate - upon entering the workforce we may have the opportunity to collaborate as we receive professional development in exchange for delivering work outcomes.
  • Co-operate - as our career grows we may gain experience by volunteering and hence co-operate with an entity that cannot offer us compensation and offers us new experiences instead
  • Configure - finally as we choose our hobbies, interests and career path -we configure the training that meets our needs and interests.

Might we find a way to bring "configure" to the learning industry - sooner?
