2014 EHR ‘Square One’

"..a just-completed survey of managers at more than 450+ behavioral health provider organizations found that while 13% are satisfied with their EHR vendor, 41% are looking for a replacement."

Snapshots are interesting - trends might be more useful - but 41% seem high. I would hope that nearly 100% would be open to improvement and that most would be interested in adding to the functionality of their EHR versus replacing it.

How do you feel about your LMS?

2015 The VA’s Troubles: A Mirror Of Our National (& State) Health Ca...

"...the VA is plagued with a few critical problems – lack of data, lack of health information technology integration, and piecemeal approaches to solving problems."

These problems do not sound unique to the VA, healthcare or any entity in particular. I (perhaps choose to) believe that we have:

  • a growing appetite for data (and a naturally lagging skill-set to apply the data well)
  • acceleration in the availability of technology with new functionality and lower cost (and a naturally lagging ability to differentiate and realize benefit from overlapping technologies)
  • increased understanding of the complexity that surrounds issues (and the belief that a better solution or a broader solution may be available "tomorrow.")

These realities require a different mindset towards solving a problem.

2016 Marketing Is Changing, Even In The Health & Human Service Space

"Interestingly, many consumers don’t think there are substantial differences among providers"

Here are two myopic views towards marketing and your business strategy:

1. Appeal to those who you do not know - nor do they know you

2. Appeal to those who you do know - and those who know you

What are the pros and cons of each view?

2017 Disruption (& Strategic Planning) Come To The I/DD Space

"...a fundamental change in financing and in sustainability for provider organizations serving the I/DD population and is driving the many discussions about new service line development, technology infrastructure, marketing, and mergers.....these unique challenges mean that the strategic planning process will involve a lot bigger changes and a lot of tough decisions."

  • "developing new organizational competencies to thrive in the world of competition for contracts and value-based care.
  • the financial sustainability issue. Not all service models will be equally successful in a value-based environment.
  • solid market intelligence and scenario-based planning are key (see Considering Future Scenarios: The OPEN MINDS Guide To Scenario-Based Planning) – along with a change-ready team that can handle turbulence and complexity."
  1. What new organizational competencies do we need?
  2. How do we assure that the financing we need will be available?
  3. What scenarios do we need to plan for?

2018 Solve The Problem, Gain A Partner

"How do health plans, when looking at a steady stream of service model ideas, evaluate the many opportunities? How do they decide which model looks like a winner, and which one goes in the “thanks for coming” pile?"

"It begins by determining whether the program identifies a problem where we need a solution. What we are really looking for are provider organizations that have the capabilities to address those priority needs. But I’m not necessarily looking for a ready-made product that we can “plug and play.” I’m looking for a collaborator—an organization that has the right talent and infrastructure to partner with to build a model that works for everyone."

Are we ready to do business this way?

2019 Which Payer/Provider Organization Partnerships Are Working & Why?

Are the "partnerships" we create with external providers important enough to assure that they are working well?

How do we objectively assess the benefits of the partnership?

Is there a role for a third party to assess and assure the benefits?

Then - what would we do?
