I think the motivation to learn comes from the need to make decisions. And if you believe (as I do) that not making a decision is a decision (to accept status quo or to defer to decisions made by others) - then it may not be sufficient to just make decisions - we likely want to make good decisions.

I think (choose to believe) that there are four factors that impact our ability to make good decisions:

  1. Experience
  2. Knowledge
  3. Relationship
  4. Outcome

and t believe there are three factors in evaluating whether the decision was a good one - or not.

  1. Do we need to make a decision now?
  2. What is the cost-benefit of making a decision now?
  3. What is the impact to future decisions?

As we seek to make good decisions we decide whether we have the ability to do so. This (self) assessment may lead us to want to learn. As you think about how you learn you may discover the PLE that you have naturally created. Having the schema that Nathan has provided may help you assure that your PLE is serving you well.
