Traditional training - whether for children or adults may be characterized as:

  1. Hierarchical (someone else with authority over you decides what you will be trained on)
  2. Structured  (objectives, content, practice, and evaluation are predetermined)
  3. Sequential (there is a prescribed order to the delivery of the training)

With traditional training the learner is successful to the extent they can adapt the way they learn to the way they are being taught.

Contemporary learning - whether for children, adults, organizations, or machines may be characterized as:

  1. Simultaneous - (the learning and teaching is multi-directional amongst all - we are all learning and teaching at the same time)
  2. Relational - (the purpose is to be known and to know others)
  3. Serendipitous -(the results may be different for everyone and at different times - and different from what was "predicted.")

What have we learned from how children approach technology and how adults approach technology?
