How do we avoid equating cost savings with quality?
(please consider reading the following for additional mental stimulation)
For healthcare and for workplace learning - a shift in mindset is needed. If our mindset is focused on treatment and our future existence (as a service provider) is focused on treatment - then we will continue to see cost savings as the "enemy" of quality.
If however, our mindset is focused on prevention and our future existences (as a service provider) is focused on reducing the needs for treatment while improving the overall levels of health (if we can ever agree on what this means) or workforce readiness (we may never agree on this either) - then we will see cost savings as the measure of quality.
Ironically - as I age and come into contact with the medical system I am frequently asked whether I have an end-of-life directive. This is a good question - one I need to answer - and I understand its impact to cost savings.
I wonder if we could shift mindsets by beginning to ask before one enters the "age of frequent contact with the medical system" if they have a "quality of life directive?" Perhaps this could begin in Kindergarten - how fascinating would it be for people to be asked each year (and then have the opportunity to review and reset) their expectations regarding:
1. How honest do you want to be for the rest of your life? (Top 10%, Top 50%, does not matter)
2. What is the best way to prove that you are honest? (Self opinion, opinion of others, no way to prove it)
3. How successful do you want to be for the rest of their life to be? (Top 10%, Top 50%, does not matter)
4. What is the best way to prove that you are successful (Self opinion, opinion of others, no way to prove it)
5. How healthy do they expect to be for the rest of their lives (Top 10%, Top 50%, does not matter)
6. What is the best way to prove that you are healthy (Self opinion, opinion of others, no way to prove it)
7. How informed do you want to be for the rest of your life (Top 10%, Top 50%, does not matter)
8. What is the best way to know if you are well informed (Self opinion, opinion of others, no way to prove it)
Elaboration (e.g. how would you define success?) would be encouraged as it would be the most revealing to the individual as their life progressed and their interests evolved.
