2014 Are Hospitals’ Days Numbered?

If it is fair to ask this question - may we also ask Are Universities' Days Numbered?

I am writing this in 2016 - but in 2014 and before as well as today - we lament that young people are going to college, returning in 4,5,6 or more years - with severe debt and too many are unemployed or underemployed.

We also hear anecdotally that the worst place for a sick person to be is a hospital - not just because of the expense but because of the potential for infection.

How Open are our Minds to a complete makeover over higher ed? Does the co-operative education model of Northeastern University (and others) make more sense than ever - for every student?

Today I read an article by David Vance of CTR regarding the future of Corporate Universities. https://www.centerfortalentreporting.org/will-corporate-universitie...

What do you think - are Universities (corporate or otherwise:)

1. Relevant and Thriving

2. Relevant and Struggling to stay so

3. Not Relevant and Thriving

4. Not Relevant and not Thriving

2017 California Medicaid Launches 7 New Whole Person Care Pilots, Expand...

"On July 1, 2017, the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) launched seven new Medi-Cal Whole Person Care (WPC) pilots and another eight already launched WPC pilots were expanded. Another 10 WPC pilots that did not expand continue to operate, bringing the total number of pilots to 25. The five-year WPC pilots are locally-based initiatives that coordinate physical health, behavioral health, and social services, including non-Medicaid services, housing, and supportive services for Medicaid beneficiaries who are high users of multiple health care systems and have poor outcomes."

I have heard of corporate learning initiatives for High-potentials and I have heard of other initiatives for the "bottom" 10%. What do we do for the rest of us?

2018 New Measures Hit The Streets

"Performance measurement, and the management of that performance, may be the defining factor for successful relationships between provider organizations and health plans, but with each passing year the level of measurement fatigue and exhaustion that I’m seeing in executive teams is increasing. The main reason for this is simple—performance measurement in health and human services is an evolving, growing science."

  1. Hospitalization Following Discharge From a Skilled Nursing Facility
  2. Risk of Continued Opioid Use
  3. Prenatal Immunization Status
  4. Adult Immunization Status
  5. Continuity of Care for Medicaid Beneficiaries after Detoxification (Detox) From Alcohol and/or Drugs
  6. Follow-Up Care for Adult Medicaid Beneficiaries Who are Newly Prescribed an Antipsychotic Medication
  7. Medication Reconciliation on Admission
  8. Psychosocial Screening Using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist-Tool (PSC-Tool)

Is it possible to design solutions where measurement is a by-product of the process (remember the GPS?)

How do we avoid measuring what we can measure versus measuring what matters? (remember the joke about looking for your lost keys at night where the light is better instead of where you think you lost them?)

2019 The Complexity Challenge Keeping You Up At Night? Former Execs Advi...

"Complex environments require leaders to develop the structures and culture to enable adaptive response. Typically in times of change, leadership attempts to double down on hierarchical approaches and manage change from the top-down. This leads to a false sense of control for both managers and employees. Instead leaders need to run ...."

  1. Fail nobly
  2. Learn to live with uncertainty
  3. Decentralized management
