As "trainers" are we leaders or followers?

Who do we follow if we are followers?

Who are we leading if we are leading?

Is our leadership authentic? What threatens it? What are we doing about it?

I believe we should be leaders especially in this knowledge era. A threat that concerns me is a tendency to maintain the status quo to reflect the days when we "were in our prime." The days when we were managers, top sales people, "technical."

We need to act and behave like we are in our prime today and will still be in our prime tomorrow because we are still learning, changing and growing.

Our passion for learning can mean that we also have a passion for change and more importantly for helping others change - and create the expected increase in performance - theirs and ours!

We need to be true leaders!

Strive to achieve level 4 of authentic executive relationship -

Level 1 - Executives will listen to your explanation of what you do

Level 2 - Executives believe the proof your offer for the results you create

Level 3 - Executives allow you the opportunity to help them discover something they did not know they needed

Level 4 - Executives reach out to you when they need advice

Which level is your organization at?

One of my favorite series of questions is to ask someone what they are doing now that they were not doing a year ago or 5 years ago. Similarly - what might you not be doing a year from now or 5 years from now?

As learning leaders we need to prove that are students of change and leaders of change. We must be great at helping others change - it is important that we struggle with change - it will make us better leaders.

Try to think about something that you do regularly now and try to recall a time when you believed you would never be doing this? What caused you to change? Has it changed you in general or just this specific item?
