1. Carefully think about the assignment

2. Look at several qualified people

3. Study the performance records of qualified people to see what they do well

4. Discuss the candidates with those that have worked with them

5. Make sure the candidate understand the assignment - ninety days into the job have them commit what it takes to be successful in writing

Here's how I think we could apply this to training.

1. The learner needs to think about why they are about to embark on the training assignment - what are they expected to do.

2. The learner should consider several options for accompishing the "why" - three to five different ways

3. The learner should examine the methods and the claims and expectations for what is needed in order to produce the learner's desired results

4. The learner should speak with people who have used the methods to hear what they have to say about the results

5. After making the decision the learner will be expected to document their results after 90 days and what they would have done differently and what they would not have changed.

The role of the training organization is to help make this information accessible. Much of this could be described as "social media's" impact on learning since those technologies will help enable this process.

What do you like about this idea? What do you not like? What would it take for this to work?

When we learn for personal reasons we take the steps outlined above (except for step 5.) How many of these steps do we expect the learner to apply for the formal learing available to them in the workplace?
