Your Revenue Driver
In what ways are the measurements of the training function different from the measurements of the function that it serves?
Do the measurements of the sales training function differ from the measurements of the sales organization? How about IT training or management training or effective writing training?
How does this apply to external providers? Should they mirror the internal measurement model? How can they influence the internal measurement model?

There is a subtle conflict between the goals of the provider of training and the goals of the recipient of training. The recipient may desire to benefit from the training and then be self-sufficient. If this occurs then the provider has reduced the potential for recurring revenue or repeat business - unless it provides new products (that do not invalidate the earlier products.)
How can a provider make the learner self-sufficient without destroying its ability to survive?
A few years ago I was on the board of a nonprofit whose goal was to "eliminate prejudice." I commented (half-jokingly) that we would know we were successful if our nonprofit were no longer needed. We certainly did not want to increase prejudice or enable it - just to get funding. I wonder too loudly sometimes if politicians are truly motivated to address the social causes that earn political contribution. Well - back to the point - perhaps - I do we help someone without making them dependent upon us - and yet grow our business profitably?
