I enjoy asking people whether they learn more from their successes or from their failures.

People seem to enjoy responding that they learn more from failure. It probably helps us "rationalize" failing and it also sounds humbler - but it probably is true - do you agree?

Thomas Edison is said to have proudly reported that after "failing" to prove something via experimentation for the 10,000th time that he was not in fact failing - he had in fact "learned 10,000 things that did not work!"

As we view our life in the "rear-view" mirror we are likely to identify "failures" which served as the springboard for future success.

  • How can training leverage this "fact of life?"
  • What motivates us to continue in spite of failure?
  • Is the motivation likely to be the same for everyone? - Probably not.
  • Are we training leaders to coach through failure?
  • How can we motivate learners to continue through their failures?
