Service work is characterized as production work. Drucker asserts that what we have learned in the industrial era will help us make this work more productive.

At this point we have classifications of work as manual, service and knowledge.

Technology can help the service worker become more productive. Perhaps it will be the self-service check out line at the supermarket or the self-service pump at the gas station. Both innovations have increased the productivity of the service worker.

Several years ago I saw a demonstration of how technology was allowing for remote monitoring of patient so that the service worker (floor nurse or intern(?)) could manage more patients in a shorter amount of time - service worker productivity!
