An essential role of the instructor is to manage the learning experience to produce the desired/expected results for the learner.
The early attempts to develop self-paced learning eliminated the instructor.
The early attempts to develop elearning did the same.
The increased utilization of "web event" software for training continues this trend.
What will it take for us to reinsert management into the learning experience?
Can it be self-managed? What accountability must accompany such autonomy?

I recently signed up for a medical concierge service. I pay a fixed fee per year plus normal medical costs - it will likely cost more than what I have been doing but I have reached the point of time in my life (i,e. age) where quality means more than cost. It has caused me to wonder if such a service would be helpful for learning?
For example - if I am a mid-level sales manager and I sign up with a Sales Management Practice where I pay a fixed fee (e.g. 2K per year) and I have access to the expert whenever needed. This expert has about 200 clients so all day - every day they are working with current sales management issues. Would that be better than paying 2K to attend a 4 day class designed 10 years ago taught by someone who was a sales manager 20 years ago? - or who wanted to be one but could never earn the promotion so they started their own company?
