Drucker defines three kinds of growth - are we growing muscle, fat or cancer?
Muscle - growth that results in an increase in productivities
Fat - volume without new productivities
Cancer - volume based on reduced productivities
For example:
Muscle - integrating content via a new performance support system that allows for increased worker effectiveness and detection of areas where training is needed.
Fat - shifting content to an on-demand format without creating increases in learner productivity
Cancer - delivering content advertised as objective yet focused on the agenda of sponsors or others for whom objectivity is not the highest priority
Growth targets need to consider:
1. Maintaining previous commitments (internal and external)
2. Satisfying known opportunities for existing capabilities
3. Developing muscle (new productivities)
