What is the "middle management" of the learning activity.

I suggest the we consider the learner as the "front line." This is where the action takes place - it is their performance that matters. It's OK to use well designed course materials with effective graphics but all that really matters is the performance of the learner.

The "upper management" of the learning activity are those items that motivate the learner to learn. These include compensation structure, job satisfaction, professional pride, mandates and personal goals.

My assertion is that everything between the front line and upper management is "middle management." It is "overhead" - necessary, valuable, cherished and powerful - and where many of us make a living!

Our challenge is to enable the front line to do more (and need less from us) while doing so!

This goes against our self-preservation instincts (as "middle management.")

What are the risks/rewards of accepting this challenge?
