Drucker's assertion is that "no company can excel in many knowledge areas."
It seems that to do something really well requires a narrow and deep focus. Is this why the external training industry is so fragmented? It has ten's of thousands of tiny highly specialized firms.
What about internally? It seems like there is a constant discussion of who "owns" training. Very often it is fragmented internally on well.
Are there "natural" forces that cause this internal and external fragmentation? Are these areas of fragmentation good or bad or indifferent for our industry?
Many industries are "fragmented" externally but what other industries are fragmented internally?
Marketing? Sales? Finance? Engineering? Customer Service?
