Strategic planning should result in the commitment of resources to action.

Who is involved with the strategic planning process of the training function?

Are there resources outside of the training function that need to be committed to action in order for the training function to achieve its goals?

What role does the training function have in assuring that those resources are committed?

What are the consequences and to whom if the resources are not committed as planned?

The plan must be broken down into tasks that can be accomplished and measured. This will allow the team to identify skills gaps that would have eventually caused the plan to fail.

Recently I participated in a meeting where we developed a brilliant strategy for a series of networking meetings. The strategy failed because no one was willing to own the responsibilities of finding a facility, ordering lunch and notifying potential attendees!
