Unlike other eras that required industrial output, physical strength or money in order to succeed - the knowledge society allows a knowledge worker to succeed limited only by their desire to acquire more knowledge! This "comes at a high price:...the rat race."

Where does it end? At what point do you have enough knowledge? When can you stop learning?

Ducker suggests developing a serious satisfying outside interest. This seems smart. The key word is probably "outside" since serious, satisfying and interest may still be in pursuit of work related knowledge. This feels personally relevant.

I also think that because it is becoming more difficult to have breadth that perhaps an ever-narrowing depth will result for some.

For ludicrous example: A management coach may focus on working with left-handed, bi-lingual (English and French) technology leaders, born in Asia in November and intent on establishing a new software business in Mexico City in 2011.

I joke about their being three types of jobs nowadays

1. Full time

2. Part time

3. All the time

I am beginning to understand and articulate that success (in life and work) is more about applying knowledge than acquiring it. The workplace learning organization can help to accelerate the pace of this making this "reality" appear in the way we spend, reward and recognize effort.
